How your pension is built up

Each year 18.5 percent of your pension-qualifying income goes to the public pension: 16 percentage points to the income pension and 2.5 to the premium pension. The qualifying income is your salary after the 7 percent general pension contribution, capped at 7.5 income base amounts – 625,500 kronor for 2026. Earnings above that give no public pension at all.

With a collective agreement the employer also pays occupational pension, in the most common agreements 4.5 percent of the salary up to 7.5 income base amounts and 30 percent on the part above. That is why the occupational pension matters most if you earn above the cap – it is then the only part that keeps growing with the salary.

The age limits follow the reference age (riktålder), which is 67 during 2026. Income and premium pension can be taken at the earliest three years before it, i.e. from 64, while guarantee pension, housing supplement and income pension supplement require you to have reached the reference age. You have the right to stay at work until 69. Postponing the withdrawal raises the monthly pension, since the same capital is spread over fewer years.

The calculation is a simplification. The income pension is not a fund but an entitlement indexed to income growth, and the Pensions Agency divides your pension by a divisor based on remaining life expectancy – not a fixed number of years. Pension already earned, guarantee pension, any private savings and future pay rises are not included. Log in at minPension.se for your actual forecast.

Frequently asked questions

How much is set aside for your pension each year?

18.5 percent of the pension-qualifying income goes to the public pension, of which 16 percentage points to the income pension and 2.5 to the premium pension. On a monthly salary of 38,000 kr the qualifying income is 424,080 kr and the contribution about 6,538 kr per month. With a collective agreement an occupational pension of about 1,710 kr per month is added.

Where is the cap for the Swedish public pension in 2026?

The pension-qualifying income is capped at 7.5 income base amounts, i.e. 625,500 kronor for 2026. The cap is reached at a gross salary of about 672,600 kronor per year, roughly 56,000 kronor a month. Salary above that gives no further public pension – there the occupational pension is the only part that keeps growing.

When can you take out the pension?

The reference age is 67 during 2026. Income and premium pension can be withdrawn at the earliest three years before it, i.e. from the age of 64. Guarantee pension, housing supplement and income pension supplement require you to have reached the reference age of 67. You have the right to remain at work until the age of 69.

How much pension will you get?

On a monthly salary of 38,000 kr with a collective agreement, retirement at 67 and a 5 percent return, the contributions from age 40 give a capital of roughly 5.7 million kronor, which spread over 20 years corresponds to about 23,700 kronor a month – around 62 percent of today's salary.
