Letter sounds – find the first sound in Swedish words

A playful game for preschool and the first school years where children connect letters with sounds. Find the picture that starts with a letter, choose the letter a word starts with, or blend short words sound by sound – with pictures, big buttons and Swedish read-aloud.

How to play

The game trains the link between letters and sounds, which is the very first step in learning to read. It has three modes. In Which word starts with…? a big letter is shown and the child taps the picture whose word begins with that sound. In Which letter? a picture and its word are shown with the first letter missing, and the child chooses the letter that is missing. In Blend the sounds the letters of a short word such as SOL, BIL or KO appear one at a time, and the child blends them into a word and picks the matching picture. Each round has ten questions and ends with a score and up to three stars.

The words are Swedish, and the Swedish alphabet has 29 letters: A–Z plus Å, Ä and Ö. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U, Y, Å, Ä and Ö. A letter has both a name and a sound – the letter S is called "ess" but sounds like a long "sss". Some Swedish spellings do not match the sound you might expect: K and G often change sound before E, I, Y, Ä and Ö (kyckling starts with a "tj" sound), HJ is pronounced like J, and C and Z usually sound like S. The Easy level avoids these traps, Medium gives four choices instead of three, and Hard includes the tricky words and longer words to blend.

If your browser has a Swedish voice, the game can read letters and words aloud – press Listen to hear the word again, or turn the sound off. A good tip for adults is to say the sound rather than the letter name: "sss-ooo-lll" instead of "ess-o-ell". Your best score for each mode and level is saved locally in the browser, so children can play again and beat their own record – free, with no account and no ads in the game.
