Fractions – practise parts of a whole
A maths game about fractions for ages 9 to 12. See how much of the pizza or the bar is shaded, compare which fraction is the largest, find equivalent fractions such as 2/4 = 1/2 and work out a fraction of a number. Three levels follow what is taught at school, from the first fractions to equivalent fractions.
How to play
A fraction describes a part of a whole. The number below the fraction bar, the denominator, shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into, and the number above it, the numerator, shows how many of those parts are meant. In the game fractions are shown as pizzas and bar models, and the child answers by tapping one of the big answer buttons. Each round has ten questions and ends with a score and up to three stars.
Easy is about how much of a pizza or bar is shaded and which of two fractions with the same denominator is the largest. Medium adds more denominators, comparisons such as 1/3 and 1/5 – where the fraction with the smaller denominator is the larger one – and simple tasks such as one third of 12. Hard brings equivalent fractions such as 2/4 = 1/2, comparisons without pictures and tasks such as 3/4 of 20.
The pictures help the child understand that a fraction is a number with a size, not just two digits. A good trick is to compare with one half: 3/8 is less than a half and 3/5 is more. To find a fraction of a number, first divide by the denominator and then multiply by the numerator: 20 divided by 4 is 5, and 3 · 5 = 15, so 3/4 of 20 is 15.
