Checkers against the computer – play free online

Play checkers (draughts) against the computer on an 8 × 8 board. By default the game uses international rules on the small board – men capture backwards, you must take as many pieces as possible and kings fly across the board – and with one tap you can switch to English rules instead. Three levels, undo and statistics are included.

How to play

Checkers is played on the dark squares of a board with 8 × 8 squares. Each player starts with 12 men on the three rows nearest to them. You play the light pieces from the bottom and the computer plays the dark ones. A man moves one square diagonally forward to an empty square. When it reaches the far row it becomes a king, shown with a crown. Tap a piece to select it – dots show where it can go – and then tap the target square. If a capture continues over several pieces, you tap each landing square in turn.

You capture by jumping diagonally over an opposing piece to the empty square right behind it, and capturing is compulsory. If the capturing piece can jump again from its new square, it must keep going in the same move. With the default international rules on the 8 × 8 board (often called Brazilian draughts) men may also capture backwards, and you must choose the sequence that captures the most pieces. The king flies: it moves any number of empty squares along a diagonal, can capture a piece at a distance and may land on any empty square behind it. Captured pieces are removed only when the move is complete, and the same piece cannot be jumped twice. A man that passes the far row in the middle of a capture sequence only becomes a king if it ends its move there.

With English rules men capture only forwards, the king moves just one square at a time, and you may choose any capture sequence as long as you complete it; a man that reaches the far row by capturing is crowned and the move ends. A player who cannot move, or has no pieces left, loses. The game is drawn if the same position occurs three times or if 25 moves in a row by each side are made with kings only and without any capture. Easy makes many mistakes, Medium looks a few moves ahead and Hard thinks for about one second per move. Your wins, losses and draws are saved per level in your browser.
