English vocabulary for children – words with pictures
A friendly word game for Swedish school children learning English. Pick a theme such as animals, colours, food or the weather, then match pictures and Swedish words with the right English word – or type the word yourself. Listen to the pronunciation, collect stars and beat your record.
How to play
Choose one of ten themes – animals, colours, food, clothes, the body, school, numbers, family, weather and verbs – and a mode. In Picture → English you see an emoji picture and tap the right English word among four big buttons. In Swedish → English you see the Swedish word instead, and in Type in English you write the word yourself with the help of a hint that shows the first letter and the number of letters. Each round has ten words from the chosen theme and ends with a score, up to three stars and a list of the words to practise again.
The word lists hold between 15 and 26 common words per theme, the kind of vocabulary children meet in English lessons from the first school years up to about year 6: dog and cat, red and blue, apple and bread, mum and dad, sun and rain, run and swim. The game uses British spelling, such as colour words like grey, and accepts common alternatives when you type, for example mum or mother and trousers or jeans. Capital letters and extra spaces do not matter.
If your device has a built-in English voice, a speaker button reads the correct word aloud in British English after every answer, so children both see and hear the word. The voice comes from the browser itself and nothing is downloaded. A good way to learn glosses is to say the word aloud, start with the picture mode and then move on to typing once the words feel familiar. Your best score is saved for every theme and mode in your own browser – free and with no account.
