Freecell – solitaire with free cells

Play FreeCell solitaire right in your browser. Every card lies face up from the start, so almost every deal can be solved with the right plan. Use the four free cells wisely, move the cards by clicking – no dragging – and build the four foundations from ace to king!

How to play

FreeCell is the thinking player's solitaire. All fifty-two cards are dealt face up into eight columns, so nothing is hidden and there is no luck of the draw – almost every single deal can be solved if you find the right sequence of moves. Above the columns sit four free cells, each able to hold one card, and the four foundations that you build from ace to king in each suit.

In the columns you build downwards in alternating colours, just as in classic solitaire – a red six goes on a black seven. A free cell is a temporary parking spot for a single card. The clever part is that you may move a whole sequence at once even though the rules only really allow one card at a time: the number of cards you can shift equals one plus the number of empty free cells, doubled for every empty column. Keeping cells and columns free is therefore the key to untangling the board.

Click a card to pick it up and click where you want it – another column, a free cell, or a foundation – and a double-click sends a card straight to its foundation. The game counts your moves and your time, and your best result is saved locally in your browser. Take your time: since every card is visible, patience and planning beat speed, and with practice you will solve deal after deal.
