How to play

Luffarschack – internationally known as Gomoku or five in a row – is played on a 15×15 grid. You and the computer take turns placing a mark on an empty square: you use crosses and the computer uses rings. The goal is to be the first to line up five of your own marks in an unbroken row, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. As soon as someone gets five in a row the game is won and the winning line is highlighted.

The trick is to think both offensively and defensively at the same time. Every time you build a row of three or four you also create a threat that the opponent has to answer – but you must keep an eye on the computer's rows too, because an open four can no longer be stopped. Choose Easy for a relaxed game or Hard for an opponent that blocks your open threes and fours and hunts for its own winning lines.

You decide who starts – the first move is a small advantage, so alternate if you want a fair match. Your wins, losses and draws are saved locally in your browser, so you can follow your progress over time. Everything runs directly in the browser with no account and no installation.
