How to play

A reaction test measures how quickly you respond to a visual signal. As soon as the large area changes colour from red to green you should click as fast as you can, and the time is measured in milliseconds (ms). A typical human reaction time is around 200–300 ms, but with a little practice and focus you can push the number down.

The game runs five rounds and calculates your average as well as your best single attempt. If you click before the area turns green it counts as a false start and the round begins again – just like on a real starting line. The test comes in two modes: wait for green, and a mode where you have to hit a dot that appears in a random spot.

Your best average is saved locally in your browser so you can compete against yourself over time. Reaction ability matters in everything from traffic and sport to video games, and it is affected by sleep, caffeine and concentration. Try a few rounds when you are alert and compare with how you do when tired – the difference is usually clearly visible.
