How to play

Battleship is played on two grids of 10 × 10 squares, with columns marked A–J and rows 1–10. Each side has five ships: an aircraft carrier (5 squares), a battleship (4), a cruiser (3), a submarine (3) and a destroyer (2). First you place your fleet: choose a ship, tap the square where it should start and use Rotate to switch between horizontal and vertical. Ships may not overlap or stick out of the grid. Tap a placed ship to pick it up again, or press Random to get a complete fleet at once.

Then the battle begins. You and the computer take turns firing one shot each at the opponent's sea. A blue dot is a miss, an orange square with a red mark is a hit, and when every square of a ship has been hit it is sunk and turns dark red. The first player to sink the entire enemy fleet wins. With the optional rule that ships may not touch, no two ships can lie next to each other – not even diagonally – and the water around a sunk ship is marked automatically, which makes the hunt more logical.

The difficulty decides how the computer aims. Easy fires completely at random. Medium hunts at random but, after a hit, tries the neighbouring squares and then follows the line until the ship sinks. Hard calculates, for every square, how many ways the remaining ships could be placed there and always fires where a ship is most likely to be – a well-known probability strategy that usually finishes in about 40–50 shots.
