Kalah against the computer – sow and capture seeds

Kalah – called Kalaha in Scandinavia – is a classic sowing game from the mancala family. Pick up the seeds from one of your pits, sow them one by one around the board and try to collect more seeds in your store than the computer. Watch every seed being sown, choose a level and decide who starts.

How to play

Kalah is a game in the mancala family, and in Scandinavia it is known as Kalaha. The board has six small pits on each side and one large store at each end. Your pits are the bottom row and your store is the large pit on the right; the computer's pits are the top row with its store on the left. At the start every pit holds four seeds, and you can change that to 3, 5 or 6. On your turn you tap one of your pits that contains seeds. All the seeds are picked up and sown one at a time into the following pits counter-clockwise – to the right along your row, into your own store and then to the left along the computer's row. The opponent's store is always skipped.

If the last seed lands in your own store, you get an extra turn. If the last seed lands in one of your own pits that was empty, and the computer's pit directly opposite contains seeds, you capture: both that seed and all the seeds in the opposite pit go into your store. With the option Capture even if the opposite pit is empty switched on, the single seed is moved to your store even when there is nothing to take on the other side. The computer follows exactly the same rules, and its sowing is animated seed by seed so you can follow every move.

The game ends as soon as all six pits on one side are empty. The other player then moves all the seeds still on their own side into their own store, and whoever has the most seeds in their store wins; equal numbers is a draw. Seeds that land in a store never leave it, so extra turns and captures are the main ways to pull ahead. Easy plays almost at random, Medium thinks a few moves ahead and Hard searches deep, up to about one second per move. You can undo your last move, and your wins, losses and draws are saved per level in your browser.
