Municipality of the day – a daily Swedish geography puzzle

A secret Swedish municipality is chosen every day – the same one for everyone. You have six guesses. After each guess you see the distance in kilometres, the direction to the answer and how close you are in per cent. The municipality names are Swedish; the game is in English.

How to play

Start typing the name of a Swedish municipality and pick it from the list – you do not need to type å, ä or ö, so "Ostersund" finds Östersund. After each guess you get three clues: the distance as the crow flies from your guess to the secret municipality, an arrow showing the compass direction to the answer, and a proximity score in per cent where 100 % means you found it. Your guesses are also plotted as numbered dots on the small map of Sweden, so you can narrow down the area guess by guess. You have six guesses in total. The game includes all 290 Swedish municipalities, from Trelleborg in the south to Kiruna in the north.

Extra hints unlock along the way. After two guesses you are told which county (län) the municipality belongs to, and after four guesses you see its first letter and roughly how many people live there. Distances are calculated with the haversine formula between the coordinates of the municipalities, and the direction is the initial compass bearing from your guess to the answer. Population figures are from Statistics Sweden (SCB) for 2024 and the coordinates from Wikidata.

The municipality of the day changes at midnight Swedish time and is the same for all players, so you can compare results with friends using the share button – it copies a short summary with coloured squares and arrows but without the answer. Your streak counts days in a row with a correct answer and is stored locally in your browser. In Practice mode you can play as many random municipalities as you like without affecting your streak.
