Higher or lower? – municipal tax

Does the next municipality have a higher or lower municipal tax? Guess right and build your streak – one mistake and the round is over.

How to play

On the left you see a municipality with its total municipal tax, that is, the municipal and regional tax combined. On the right a new municipality appears – but without its tax rate. Your task is to guess whether the new municipality has a higher or lower tax than the one shown. Guess right and your streak grows by one, and the new municipality takes over as the starting point. Guess wrong and the round is over. Should both municipalities have exactly the same tax rate, it always counts as correct.

The differences in municipal tax are bigger than many people think – between Sweden's cheapest and most expensive municipality there are several percentage points, which can mean thousands of kronor in your wallet every month. As a rule of thumb, big-city municipalities and the suburbs around Stockholm often have lower tax, while smaller rural municipalities in northern Sweden tend to be higher.
