Guess the year – build a timeline of Swedish history
From the Kalmar Union and Gustav Vasa to ABBA, Spotify and NATO membership. You get one event at a time – place it in the right spot on the timeline, before or after the events already there. How long a timeline can you build?
How to play
The game starts with one event already placed on the timeline, with its year shown. Then you get a new event without a year. Tap the gap where you think it belongs – above an event if it happened earlier, below if it happened later. If you are right the card stays on the timeline and you get a point; if you are wrong the card is still put in its correct place, marked in red, so you learn the order as you go. On Normal you have three lives, on Hard the game ends at the first mistake. Events from the same year may be placed on either side of each other.
The deck contains 180 events from almost nine centuries: Uppsala becoming an archbishopric in 1164, the Kalmar Union in 1397, the Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520 and Gustav Vasa’s election as king in 1523, the warship Vasa sinking in 1628, the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 and Sweden’s last war in 1814. Modern Sweden is here too: women voting for the first time in 1921, Dagen H in 1967 when traffic switched to the right, the murder of Olof Palme in 1986, EU membership in 1995, the euro referendum in 2003 and NATO membership in 2024 – along with inventions and companies like dynamite, Volvo, IKEA and Spotify, plus books, films, music and sport.
You can limit the game to one category – history, society, science and business, or culture and sport – and each combination of level and category keeps its own record, saved locally in your browser. A good strategy is to think in eras: the great-power era in the 1600s, the Age of Liberty in the 1700s, industrialisation and emigration in the 1800s and the building of the welfare state in the 1900s. The longer the timeline grows, the more precisely you have to know the years.
