Sweden's provinces – a map quiz on the 25 landskap

Learn Sweden's 25 provinces (landskap) on the map: name the marked province, find it yourself, or answer questions about its provincial flower, provincial animal and region. The landskap are historical provinces and are not the same as today's 21 counties (län). Names of provinces, flowers and animals are shown in Swedish.

How to play

The game has three modes with ten questions per round. In Which province? a pulsing dot marks a province on the map and you pick its name from four alternatives. In Find the province you get a name and tap the right dot among all 25 dots on the map. In Flower & animal you answer questions about the provincial flower, the provincial animal and which of the three regions – Götaland, Svealand or Norrland – the province belongs to. Each round ends with a score and up to three stars, and your best score per mode is saved in the browser.

Sweden has 25 landskap. They are historical provinces and have no administrative role today; the country is instead governed through 21 counties (län) and 290 municipalities, whose borders often differ from the provinces. Götaland has ten provinces, Svealand six and Norrland nine. Lappland is the largest by area, and Öland, Gotland and Blekinge are among the smallest. The dots in the game mark the approximate middle of each province, since the game does not draw the borders.

The provincial flowers were proposed in 1908 and the provincial animals were chosen in 1988 after a public vote. For a few provinces, such as Dalarna, Härjedalen, Medelpad, Blekinge and Öland, more than one flower is commonly mentioned, so the game leaves out flower questions for them. Some provincial animals are birds, fish or insects, for example the osprey (fiskgjuse) in Södermanland and the stag beetle (ekoxe) in Blekinge. All names in the game are given in Swedish.
