Number bonds to 10 – find the numbers that make 10
A playful maths game for reception to year 2. Children practise number bonds to 10 – pairs of numbers that make 10 together, such as 3 and 7 or 4 and 6 – using ten-frames and dots. Find the missing partner or play memory, then move on to pairs that make 20 and 100.
How to play
Number bonds to 10 are two numbers that make 10 together: 0 and 10, 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 and 5. In the mode Which partner? a ten-frame with dots is shown together with a task such as 7 + ? = 10. The child sees how many squares are empty and picks the right number from four big buttons. When the answer is correct, the empty squares fill up with blue dots so that both partners are seen together. Each round has ten questions and gives up to three stars.
In Memory twelve cards lie face down. Turn over two cards at a time – if the numbers make 10 together you keep the pair, otherwise the cards are turned back. The game counts your tries, and the fewer tries you need, the more stars you get. The levels grow with the child: Bonds to 10 for the youngest, Bonds to 20 with two ten-frames and numbers up to 20, and Bonds to 100 with whole tens such as 30 + 70 = 100.
Knowing the number bonds to 10 by heart is an important foundation in early maths. They are used when adding across ten, for example 8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3, and later when calculating with bigger numbers and money. The ten-frame helps the child see the numbers instead of counting one by one. Your best result is saved per level and mode locally in the browser – free and with no account.
