The most common name – higher or lower?
Are there more Swedes called Anna or Eva? Is Johansson more common than Karlsson? Guess whether the next name has more or fewer bearers in Sweden, and see how far your streak goes. The names and figures are Swedish, from Statistics Sweden (SCB).
Source: SCB name statistics (2021/2022). First names and surnames: number of bearers in Sweden in 2021. Newborns: number of babies given the name in 2022.
How to play
The left card shows a name and how many people in Sweden have it. The right card shows a new name with its figure hidden. Decide whether the new name has more or fewer bearers. Guess right and the number counts up, your streak grows and the new name moves to the left for the next duel. One wrong guess ends the game. Two names never have the same or almost the same figure, so every question has a clear answer.
There are three modes. First names mixes the 100 most common women's and men's names in Sweden in 2021, so you may have to compare Anna with Lars. Surnames uses the 100 most common surnames – a list dominated by names ending in -son, such as Andersson, Johansson and Karlsson. Newborns 2022 uses the most popular names given to girls and boys born in Sweden in 2022, where the numbers are in the hundreds rather than tens of thousands.
All figures come from the name statistics of Statistics Sweden (SCB). Since the game is built on Swedish data, the names are Swedish – which also makes it a fun way to discover which names are typical in Sweden today compared with a few decades ago. Your best streak is saved separately for each mode in your browser.
