How to play

Kodpilen is a free programming game for young children. The robot 🤖 must reach the battery 🔋 on a grid. Tap the command buttons to build a program – each tap adds a block to the program row – and then press Run. The robot carries out one command at a time and the current block lights up, so the child can follow along. If the robot drives into a wall it stops and you can change the program. Undo removes the last block, Clear empties the program and Stop halts the robot.

The 30 levels grow step by step. Levels 1–10 use arrows for up, down, left and right. From level 11 the robot instead understands Forward, Turn left and Turn right, which means you have to think about which way the robot is facing – the small orange arrow shows it. From level 21 you can use Repeat blocks that run a few commands 2, 3 or 4 times, and the number of blocks allowed gets smaller. On many levels diamonds 💎 have to be collected before the robot may go to the battery.

The game trains the same skills as the programming content in the Swedish maths curriculum for the early school years: giving exact step-by-step instructions, testing them, finding and fixing errors, and spotting repeating patterns. Fewer blocks give more stars – three stars when the program is as short as possible. Unlocked levels and stars are saved in the browser on this device, with no account.
